Father Daniel Velasco, administrator of Our Lady of the Holy Souls Church in Little Rock, will celebrate the annual Veterans Day Mass at 9:30 a.m., Friday, Nov. 11 in the pavilion at the Little Rock National Cemetery at 2523 Springer Blvd, which is about two miles southeast of the state Capitol. All are invited to attend. Because seating is limited, participants are encouraged to bring their own chairs.
Catholic parishes and schools across Arkansas will also host programs to honor veterans. To find events in your area, contact the parish or school near you.
The annual observance of Veterans Day in the United States on Nov. 11 has it roots in the armistice that ended World War I in 1918. The armistice between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed thereafter that Nov. 11 be observed as "Armistice Day." In 1954, Congress passed legislation that renamed the federal holiday "Veterans Day," in recognition of the service of veterans of all U.S. wars. Lord God, Almighty Father,
creator of mankind and author of peace,
as we are ever mindful of the cost paid for the liberty we possess,
we ask you to bless the members of our armed forces.
Give them courage, hope and strength.
May they ever experience your firm support, gentle love and compassionate healing.
Be their power and protector, leading them from darkness to light.
To you be all glory, honor and praise, now and forever.
Amen.
