“The Message of Mercy: The Biblical Roots of Pope Francis’ Teachings” is the theme for the 2016 Bible Institute June 17-19 at St. John Catholic Center in Little Rock. Father Garrett Galvin, OFM, will be the featured speaker. He is the author of "Egypt as a Place of Refuge" (Mohr Siebeck, 2011) and "David’s Successors: Kingship in the Old Testament" (Liturgical Press, 2016). He currently teaches full time at Franciscan School of Theology in Oceanside, Calif.
He will speak five times throughout the weekend on the following themes: Compassion, Grace and Love: The Concept of Mercy in the Old Testament; Mercy as Central to the Psalms; Mercy in the Lives of Ruth, Esther and Tobit; The Lord’s Great Mercy (Luke 1:58): God’s Solidarity with Us; and The Demands of Mercy: Mercy as a Foundation of the New Testament Church.
In addition to Father Garrett's talks, this event includes prayer, small group discussion and Mass. Check-in begins at 5:30 p.m. Friday, June 17 with the opening session at 7 p.m. The weekend concludes after the 11:15 a.m. Mass on Sunday, June 19. The number of participants is limited. The $100 registration fee includes three meals on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday, but does not include housing. Participants may reserve on-campus rooms in Fletcher Hall at the time of registration. Single occupancy is $40 per night and double occupancy is $50 per room ($25 per person) per night.
