In May, Little Rock Scripture Study (LRSS) released a new series, Alive in the Word, with two titles, “Mary, Favored by God” and "Trust: Confidence in the God of Salvation.” Eight more will be released in the coming year, including, “Mercy: God’s Nature, Our Challenge," in July to coincide with the Jubilee Year of Mercy. While the emphasis in other LRSS series is biblical understanding and reflection, Alive in the Word focuses on biblical spirituality, reflection and how to apply the lessons to one’s life. A total of 418 students from five Catholic high schools in Arkansas graduated in May. Commencement exercises were held May 14-27 at the following schools: Subiaco Academy — The baccalaureate Mass was celebrated at St. Benedict Church followed by the graduation in the inner courtyard on Saturday, May 14. The valedictorian was Kangkyu Kim of Seoul, South Korea. The salutatorian was Nicholas Ryan Langston of Fort Smith. “The Message of Mercy: The Biblical Roots of Pope Francis’ Teachings” is the theme for the 2016 Bible Institute June 17-19 at St. John Catholic Center in Little Rock. Father Garrett Galvin, OFM, will be the featured speaker. He is the author of "Egypt as a Place of Refuge" (Mohr Siebeck, 2011) and "David’s Successors: Kingship in the Old Testament" (Liturgical Press, 2016). The Minister to Deacons Office at the Diocese of Little Rock will host its annual Deacon Recommitment Mass and Dinner, Sunday, May 15 at St. John Catholic Center in Little Rock. Mass will be celebrated at 3 p.m. in Morris Hall Chapel followed by dinner in the dining hall. All deacons and their wives currently serving in the diocese are welcome. Matt Glover, diocesan chancellor for canonical affairs, and his wife, Brooke, will attend to meet their new diaconate family. Bishop Anthony B. Taylor will ordain Glover to the permanent diaconate on May 25 at Christ the King Church in Little Rock. Taylor addressed the following letter to the priests, deacons, seminarians, staff and people of the Diocese of Little Rock regarding the death of his mother, Rachel Taylor, on Tuesday, April 26, 2016. "This is to advise you that my mother, Rachel (Roth) Taylor died today, April 26, at about 1:30 p.m. and is now at rest following a long and difficult illness. So while this is a time of loss for me and my family, we are also filled with relief that her time of suffering has come to an end. We may be reaching the end of the greatest liturgical season of the liturgical year, but several holy days at the end of Easter Time and into Ordinary Time prove these months are anything but ordinary. Seven special holy days, known as solemnities, take place through the end of June. These include: Ascension of the Lord, Pentecost Sunday, the Most Holy Trinity; Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ; Sacred Heart of Jesus; Nativity of St. John the Baptist; and Sts. Bishop Anthony B. Taylor will ordain five men to the priesthood for the Diocese of Little Rock on Saturday, May 28. They are: Deacons Joseph Chan, Mario Jacobo, Taryn Whittington, Norman McFall and Stephen Gadberry. The 10 a.m. ordination Mass will be held at Christ the King Church in Little Rock with a reception to follow. The night before, on Friday, May 27, all are invited for eucharistic adoration and vespers to pray for these men and for an increase in vocations to the priesthood and religious life at 6:30 p.m. Dr. Chan, 51, will celebrate his first Masses Sunday, May 29 at 8 and 10:30 a.m. at St. Boniface Church in Fort Smith.
