The second Digital Disciples Communications Day will be held Thursday, Oct. 17 at St. John Catholic Center in Little Rock for Catholic communicators at the diocese and in parishes, schools and religious orders across Arkansas. It will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Fitzgerald Hall and will include a plenary session, three workshops, lunch and Mass. This month, the diocese announced the 2019-20 One Church partner: Holy Spirit Church in Hamburg. This young parish in southeast Arkansas has a new parish building that it would like to pay off so it can offer more spiritual and social programs in the church and community. A Firestone tire shop was converted into a sanctuary, office and parish hall for the community in 2013. At the time, no extra money was available to replace the roof. Basil H. Taylor, father of Bishop Anthony B. Taylor, died peacefully Sept. 19. He was 90 years old. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Rachel Taylor. He is survived by his seven children, 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. A wake and rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22 at the Trout Funeral Home Chapel in Ponca City, Okla. Bishop Taylor will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial for his father at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23 at St. Mary Church in Ponca City, Okla. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery. The Diocese of Little Rock is organizing a chapter of the Maria Goretti Network (MGN), a ministry for those who have been abused, their families, and those who support their recovery. It was named after St. Maria Goretti, the patron saint of abused children and rape victims. Alessandro Serenelli tried to rape her when she was 11 years old. He then stabbed her 14 times and fled. Before she died from her injuries in 1902, she forgave him. While he was in prison, Maria appeared to him in a dream, which led to his conversion. St. Maria was canonized in 1950. ... More
Bishop Anthony B. Taylor announced the following pastoral appointments Monday, Sept. 9, 2019, for the Diocese of Little Rock. Effective Oct. 1: Rev. Aby Abraham, IMS, appointed associate pastor of the Cathedral of St. Andrew in Little Rock and St. Patrick Church in North Little Rock. He is relieved of his responsibilities as pastor of St. Joseph Church in Center Ridge; Msgr. Jack D. Harris appointed pastor of St. Joseph Church in Center Ridge. The Diocese of Little Rock will host its one-day Senior High Youth Rally Sunday, Oct. 13 at Mount St. Mary Academy in Little Rock. This year’s theme, "Rescued from Indifference," will be presented by Noelle Garcia. She is a Catholic recording artist, speaker, wife and mom of five kids who holds a master's degree in theological studies from Newman University in Wichita, Kansas. A New Life course for the St. Andrew School of Evangelization will be held Aug. 30 to Sept. 1 at St. John Catholic Center in Little Rock. This Catholic evangelization program for Spanish-speaking youth is designed to help teach participants how to go out into the world and proclaim the Good News. The cost is $60 per person and that includes meals and lodging. Complete the registration form and mail the $30 deposit (non-refundable) to the Office of Faith Formation. More than 6,600 Catholic school students returned to the classroom this month in Arkansas. There are 26 Catholic schools, including the newest school in northwest Arkansas, Ozark Catholic Academy, which opened in 2018. Catholic schools in the Diocese of Little Rock range from preschool to high school in 18 cities statewide. The staffs of these schools have been preparing for the new school year for weeks, especially the principals.
