The sixth annual Catholic Schools Scholarship Appeal will kick off Nov. 10 to assist schools statewide in providing tuition assistance to students who qualify. This year, $3.2 million is needed to provide assistance to 1,164 students. Parish subsidies and school scholarship funds cover $1.6 million, which leaves a need for $1.6 million in donations through this appeal. In a letter to previous donors, Bishop Anthony B. Bishop Anthony B. Taylor released the following letter updating the people of the Diocese of Little Rock about the ongoing clergy sexual abuse crisis and assistance to victims: "Brothers and Sisters in Christ, last month I issued a letter to all the people of the Diocese of Little Rock to be transparent about how the sexual abuse crisis in the Church included Arkansas. I released the names of 12 priests with service in Arkansas who, as of Sept. 10, 2018, had been credibly accused of the sexual abuse of minors over the course of the last 70 years. The Diocese of Little Rock recently launched One Church: Unite Arkansas in Faith and Mission, a new program that invites all parishes in Arkansas to partner with a struggling, neighboring rural parish and help it become a thriving community. Catholic Charities of Arkansas will oversee this initiative, which will run from September to August each year. This year’s partner is St. Luke Church in Warren, a growing congregation in southeast Arkansas whose decaying, older building can no longer accommodate them. The Diocese of Little Rock awarded respect life grants to eight recipients the first week in October to mark Respect Life Month. Grants ranged from $100 to $1,000. A total of $6,000 was distributed to Catholic churches and organizations in Arkansas that promote a consistent ethic of life in the areas of education, outreach and direct client services. The Respect Life Office accepted applications for this new program until Aug. 30. Diocese of Little Rock seminarian Martín Amaro was one of 40 men ordained to the transitional diaconate by Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, archbishop of Galveston-Houston and president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, on Sept. 27 at St. Peter Basilica at the Vatican. He served his first Mass as a deacon on Sept. 28 at the basilica. Archbishop Jorge Carlos Patron Wong of Mexico, who is in charge of seminarian formation at the Vatican, was the celebrant. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) is asking Catholics across the country to take up an emergency special collection to help the Church respond to immediate needs for water, food, shelter, and medical care, and aid in long-term recovery and rebuilding as a result of natural disasters in 2018. Bishop Anthony B. Pope Francis is asking the Catholic faithful worldwide to pray the rosary every day in October, which is traditionally known as the month of the rosary. His invitation issued on Sept. 29, the feast of the archangels, explained that doing this would join us "in communion and in penitence, as the people of God, in asking the holy Mother of God and St. Michael, the archangel to protect the Church from the devil, who always seeks to separate us from God and from each other." The Diocese of Little Rock will host its one-day Junior High Youth Rally Sunday, Nov. 11 at Mount St. Mary Academy in Little Rock. This year’s theme, "Love Transforms Identity," which is based on John 8:11 will be presented by Katie Prejean McGrady. She is an international speaker and author of "Room 24: Adventures of a New Evangelist" and "Follow: Your Lifelong Adventure with Jesus." This one-day event, which will also include praise and worship, games, skits, lunch and Mass, is open to youth in grades 6-8. The cost is $40 a person. Scholarships are available.
